What program do you use to create website mockup...or are people using only PhotoShop?

    Thank you,

    Fireworks for pixel perfect comps
    Illustrator for quick visuals
    Photoshop as a last resort

What do you mean by "mockup"?

Do you mean a wireframe that defines layout and UI? In that case, I use Visio or Illustrator.

If you mean the actual graphic design, I use Photoshop and occassionally Fireworks.

I am with adjustafresh on both fronts. Tried using fireworkks a couple times and didn't care for it much. I've used Illustrator a couple times for wireframes, but definitly favor Visio (no particular reason, old habit I guess).

Photoshop I love it, and sometimes I go directly to the pure design from the "mock" act, anyways i haven't use visio, i tried Illustrator for this matter but i don't like the way it handle pixel based designs, is just that i rather all the zooming options of Photoshop, well this is it, i would like to try visio, someday.

I like photoshop, for the same reason Vudrok basically. I don't like the way illustrator handles pixels. I have been the "coder" for a couple designs given to me in an illustrator file, and would rather of had a photoshop layout given to me. The good side of illustrator though is if the client wan't the "page blown up" or shrunk down then it looks faily decent either way.

"I don't like the way Illustrator handles pixels." Illustrator is meant for vector graphics, I believe. It's not necessarily meant for bitmapping.

Yeah I am with the Photoshop guys on this one. Once I got a basic "mock up" layed out in PS, and all my folders etc are set up, I usually go straight into the main design from there on. Personal preferance I guess :)

Fireworks is better at pixel stuff than Photoshop imo...

It also has "movie clips" that you can reuse in a similar way to your library of movie clips in Flash) - big timesaver if using one element more than once...

Dear PettRider, that is basically what I was saying. Don't get me wrong, I love illustrator, just for a design that is not meant for a specific pixel based dimension. I am not the best explainer.

I'd start using Photoshop, and get used to it. Seeing that Macromedia was bought by Adobe, I'm sure FW will evenually become obsolete (and certain elements will probably be added to PS).

Since I'm kinda new to the "pro" design process I really didn't think to much about showing a client a mockup I just did my design and since the pages were small and there was no big money involved it wasn't a big deal..anyway now i'm kinda getting bigger clients and my skills are stronger/better I want to chose the "right" path.

I was thinking to use Illustrator to design the page so I can print it out and show it to the clients on paper and than go to Photo Shop and to the graphics. I know..everyone has its own way but what do you think about this idea. I know there is no wrong or right it's the matter of getting used to something.

    Thank you a lot,

    Chillout

Showing clients the Web site on paper is the wrong way to go about things anyway. Web sites don't reach people on paper. They reach people on computer monitors.

    PettyRider,

That is easy if my client is someone who works in an office, who knows how to use a pc etc. but at some point I'm meeting people who don't work on a pc (construction) and since I'm working from home and don't have an office it's hard to have ppl. coming in so I have to have another option for them...otherwise yes monitor is the way to go.

    Thank you,
    CO

Photoshop is an amazing tool and a lot easier to get into that I first thought (PS 6.0, if I recall). There are a tonne of tutorials online that take you through different processes step-by-step. Can't say I've ever used Fireworks so I don't know how it compares.

    Definately Fireworx!

Just as "didats" said, PS has too many functions for this and it's a breeze with FW - and also probably out of habit, been using fireworks since version 3.0!

"thepowerofed" - i really doubt Adobe will make FW obsolete, it does have a huge fan base...

I like to use PS. But before you go to the computer, make som sketches with Pen & Paper. Better for creativity... I think

I think it just depends on what kind of approach and style you have. Personally, I love art, I love design, I like to get my virtual hands dirty so it's photoshop all the way for me.

for particular elements in a design I use Photoshop but for the actuall mockup I like Fireworks much better. Exporting is better in Fireworks and is just faster to make changes with IMO. To me Photoshop is really good for making art and Fireworks is really gook at making that art into a web page and gives you better exporting tools to turn it into a web page.
