i use transparent images on my divs as background overlapping each other.whenever i test my site on explorer, it doesn't recogize my trans, instead it renders a gray colored area around my image. is there any way i can fix this problem?

By what you are saying it appears you are using PNG.

If you are using PNG use ONLY PNG8 compression to render correctly in IE and others

I recommend using GIF though. It renders ok in all browsers

    that's the compromise
niether gif nor PNG8 deal well with fading effects (shadows)

There is a way of dealing with the human eye though.
I use Fireworks to do my graphics. Before i export something with shadows I place it in a separate file with the background similar in tone with the one i am going to apply the shadowed object to. Then I chose to export as GIF WEBSNAP 256 and apply an INDEX TRANSPARENCY. This way I get the shadow and some of the background tone around it to keep it feather-like not anti-alias.

You can see an example of this in my recently published website www.cassysdesign.ro - the menu buttons on the left are individual GIFs layed over a paper (JPG)

appart form "contact"(which overlaps two different colour tones) you can barely see the surrounding background used for the surrounding shadows

Dean Edwards' IE7 JavaScript Library can be used to fix png transparency in IE/PC.

Try running the PNG through PNGout:

It helps if you saved the image in Photoshop.
