I work for a company that needs to convert a small number of AVI files to Flash video format on a small budget. Using YouTube, Google video, etc. is not an option due to legal reasons.

Can anyone recommend a good, cheap Flash video encoding application? (Cheap = less that $100)

Flix is by far the best, but it's $199. They do have a Standard Version that is only $39, but you get what you pay for... the standard version does not support two-pass encoding, so the quality won't be as good.

Install Linux and use ffmpeg: free and command line. :) converts almost every video format to flv.

    Link: FFMPEG

Using it to create a youtube clone

Thanks for the feedback! I'll definitely try the demo versions of Flix, JohnRiv, first thing on Monday. I can't install Linux on my work machine to try FFMPEG, would that be something I could use while running a Linux distro from the cd?

JohnRiv, do you happen to know off the top of your head what the quality of the cheap version of Flix is like compared to YouTube?

not off hand, although there are a lot of variables that go into the quality of a video, such as compression, bitrate, frame rate, and movie dimensions. All of the variables can have an even greater effect on the end file size of the movie. So you can definitely get better quality than what you see on YouTube, but the file size may not be as low as you want (or it might be, I don't know off hand)

FFMPEG doesnt come installed in the CD distro, so I think it will be difficult to try it out on your work machine. Otherwise you could try on your linux hosting server (if you have any).

    Try RIVA FLV Encoder: http://www.rivavx.com/index.php?encoder&L=3

I've used it for doing a showreel for one of my clients - pretty decent.

    To top that... It's free!

if you’re on OSX, Quicktime Pro (30$) + Perian (free) does the job perfectly.
