I am looking for a solution to a seemingly simple issue:
Scenerio:
1 Photographer with a dozen or so clients a month, highly professional (so are his rates). Currently uses local (client-side) application for Asset Management, but needs a web-based solution. Since he is on the road most of the time, he wants to upload his files in large quantities, show his clients proofs online, where they can (only after logging in) browse THEIR proofs, and save the ones they like to purchase at a later time.
I imagine using some combination of a shopping cart, directory listing script, thumbnail creation, multi-page galleries... any ideas? -
The photographer I hired for my upcoming wedding uses Pictage for the same features you're looking for. A couple weddings I've attended before have used the same service as well, so you want want to check it out.

I am looking for something that I can host myself. -
Not sure how helpful scooch would be but he could upload on the road - it's easy to install and clients would get easy access via a simple url - no cart feature though.
Expression Engine might be one to look at too - has cart and photo gallery plug-ins. -
http://celumimagine.com/en.htm looks pretty functional. Not sure if it matches your requirements exactly though
