Found this site via del.icio.us popular today: Design FCKR. Looks like an interesting design inspiration and news website. Looks like our friend Alex has been busy (check the Posted by: in the News section on the homepage).
Hey Alex, I was just wondering, I saw that you went 970px wide on this. I'm curious what factors went into the decision on width.. I guess what I really want to know is "when" is it okay to "go wide". Obviously, the content is more suited to designers and the like who are far more likely to have larger monitors.. Were any other factors involved? ..or are there general "rules of thumb" when making that decision?
The target audience was a big factor. Other factors include imagery, I wanted to have enough space for bold imagery without having to sacrifice other types of content, and number of columns to get that feeling of "publication".
I remember coming across this merely from a design perspective. I was immediately smitten by it. A lot of people are using Georgia now, but I find the serif fonts much nicer to read in headers that san-serif, such as Trebuchet.
I like it. Although like CK I'm into serif fonts I think you still have to think about how they go with the overall design of the site, this font definitely works well.
