I have a client looking to use a CMS that in addition to allowing him to maintain his site's content, will also allow him to manage mailing-lists and create, send out, and archive HTML formatted email news letters. Does anyone have any suggestions? Open Source would be prefereable, but purchasing something is NOT out of the question.

hmmm..... from what i see, u will either have to settle with a sum of products, a cms, and a mailing-list, or make it yourself, this way it'll be jsut the way u need it.

p.s. it would be nice if it would be OpenSource too :)

Check out Expression Engine - not open source, but it's affordable:
    Flexible Email Options
HTML email, priorities, word wrapping, CC, BCC and any combination of recipients, from member groups, to individuals, to members of your mailing list.

I'm trying to nail down which CMS to use on a new project as well. Expression Engine, Joomla & Drupal are all in the running. Any comments from anyone with experience using these CMS's to run online magazine type sites is much appreciated.

    Thanks

Or cut your losses and use something like http://mailbuild.com/ to handle enewsletters seperately

I have thought about treating the newsletters seperate, however the client would like to have the newsletters all archived on his site as well, so being able to use one system would be ideal.

adjustafresh - thanks for the heads up on Expression Engine, looks like a great tool. Unfortunately, for the HTML email support, it looks like the HTML has to be generated with with newsletter content - no templating system. I'm going to look into further, hoping I'm wrong, because it really does look like a great product.

Has anyone used Joomla with the Acajoom extension? It looks like a lot of good things are being said about it.

Acajoom will handle what you're trying to do, i think, and it's about as good as it gets for Joomla newsletter managers. none of the other Joomla newsletter components are really worth much, and none of them offer archiving AND multiple lists. the backend control layout leaves a lot to be desired, but any Joomla user should be used to that. at any rate, i'd investigate Drupal possibilities, to see if there might be something a little slicker available there.
