Please post host reviews. Try to make your post as detailed as possible. Try to be more indepth than "I think DreamHost is cool." Why is it good, in what country is it based, do they provide what they advertise, etc.?

I've found those in my searches. I don't have any client experiences with any of them but I'm sure if you visit each hosting company's forums you will be able to get a feeling for their service.

Also, if you need hosting with lots of space and bandwidth for a small, personal website, I would go with Bihira (http://bihira.com) although they won't be accepting new orders until later. I have had experience with Bihira.

TextDrive is attractive, but it's twice as expensive. Not only that it has the lastest stuff, but it also has Subversion.

SV rocks as does PHP5, Ruby (On Rails), SSH, Perl, Python.

If you need those extras, TD is your best bet.

    Dreamhost is the shizzle.

Try to be more indepth than "I think DreamHost is cool." Why is it good, in what country is it based, do they provide what they advertise, etc.?

dreamhost gives you unlimited domains, storage space that increases weekly, bandwidth limits that increase over time, jabberIM servers, your usual PHP (default is still 4.*), MySQL, Perl, Python, Ruby on Rails, and the ability to compile your own versions of stuff server side (like PHP5).
  3.  permalink
Plus now you have 20GB of storage space + 1TB of bandwidth.

from an outside view dreamhost seems, well, dreamy. Does anyone have in-depth experience with this service? I too am interested in a good (generous) host with humanly prices
  4.  permalink
The worst I've heard from anyone who is a client of DreamHost is that the server seems overselled due to slow FTP and HTTP speeds at times.

However, for a personal site, it's great.

I've only had a couple instances of problems with them, mostly from external DOS attacks that have hit. The other (which is obviously beyond their control) was during that LA blackout a couple months back after which they had some intermittent hardware problems but they cleaned it up fairly quickly (their building had backup generators that kicked in and kept things running at first then those failed as well).

well my databses have been down for a 5 or less minutes 3 times already in the 5 months of service i had with them.

Personally, I cannot live with a shared hosting solution. Everyone's always complaining about not having so-and-so a feature (including me), so I just got myself a virtual-dedicated box. That was the best thing I ever did. Linode is the greatest company ever. Not the cheapest form of hosting, or the easiest/most accessible, but the best. The staff there are quick, knowledgable, and any problems with the hosts are quickly resolved. I think the reason the level of quality is so good is that it is a few-man operation with a low number of customers.

    I've used Fasthosts and Dreamhost...

    • Fasthosts is reliable and reasonably priced if you need standard hosting and not much access to any of the more complicated settings. Problems? If you need any extras, like more mySQL databases, you usually have to pay something stupid to bolt it on to your hosting. 24hour support by phone also very handy.

    • If you need more space (the basic package now comes with 20gigs and unlimited domains for $9.95/month!) or advanced controls for subdomains, mail servers, ftp etc etc then Dreamhost is an amazing deal. I even managed to get the first year for peanuts, and a domain name registration is included as long as your account is active. Problems? Well there is the odd server or database outage but nothing more than you would expect from any other host.... Also the only support is by email so sometimes you have to wait a few hours for an answer.

I'm on Site5.com - no complaints yet, they have an interesting multi-account management dashboard and have Ruby on Rails installed. Also, the boss blogs and seems to be really motivated to make a good hosting experience. In addition, reasonable pricing and now they have some new versioning feature which saves all versions of files you upload. In addition, I get emails notifying me of any maintenance they're going to do.

    Totally seconded.

As for the better business bureau: 12 complaints over 4 years makes for 3/year average. Which isn't bad by my estimation.

    I would recommend, hostmysite.com ( http://hostmysite.com )

I have been with them for over 4 years, and they have always done a great job. I've never had an outage, slowdown, dataloss or any other issue. They are always upgrading and staying current with new technologies. If you need something that isn’t installed (even on shared hosting packages) they will work with you. They have great support, a very knowledgeable staff. They seem to go out of there way to help. There are also many different hosting options for you to choose from. They grew by over 573.5% in three years and are #190 in the Inc. 500.

Here is a link their BBB Report
    http://www.data.bbb.org/wilmington.asp?yid=KWGlGhLfNd

Again, a very excellent and affordable host.

Well, nobody mentioned Media Temple yet and right here where's CSSBeauty is hosted. I really like that they don't allow any pornography or adult content on their shared servers but that's about what I like and I'd be interested to here what's the others like or got to say about MT hosting.

    Thanks.

Perhaps I'm just slow but I can't find any techinical specs for MT. What version of PHP? MySQL? PERL? Do they have Ruby (and the Rails Framework)? Any other fad stuff they have?

    Good Host does not exist.
At some point they all a like some better then other but if you have a business I always suggest to have own dedicated server.
Specially if you developer most of the times you need some additional software installed for specific use but none of the Hosting companies will do that unless you have dedicated server.

    Best ,DS

I use a company called hosting.com. I began using them about 6 years ago when they were called HalfPriceHosting.com. They have recently bough a lot of hosting properties and have changed their name to hosting.com.

I began on a shared plan and now host 2 dedicated servers with them. Unparalled support with quick response times and dead-on answers. Never had to pay a "support" fee or extra to have them set things up.

They are based in Kentucky but just bought a data warehouse in California. Also have a facility in Boston. Ask for Mark Click. He is the man. Excellent deals, quick turn around, great products. Tell them that Matt Massey sent you so i get some praise ;)
