Just a quick question, not even sure if anyone can really give me an answer to this anyway...
I am a professional web-designer in full-time employment, I have recently been pursuing some extra freelance work, and have found some (3 or so 'brochure type' sites).
Anyway my problem is I have no idea how to bill the clients or how to value my services, all this is done for me at work.
My first job is a 'build only' project, a simple 5 page brochure site, CSS & XHTML (handcoded) with a little Flash for 1 or 2 elements, design provided by the client. I have no idea what the going rate for this kind of work is in the UK.
Does anyone have a pearl of wisdom to offer me on this one ? I don't want to go in too high as these are my first freelance clients, and I would like the work to get me going on my own.
Essentially -- you need to find out two things. What are freelancers in your area charging and what is the opportunity cost of the project? How low are you willing to go in order to keep the job -- at what point does it not become worth it to you?
Here is a "sample" proposal you can work from if you'd like. It is what I use for smaller clients -- they tend to react better to one-pagers.
...also consider the client. Small businesses and non-profits normally will not be willing or able to pay the same amount as larger corporations for similar work.
you can charge with them hourly basis man ..... i am working with UK based clients .. the are quite smart.. Just charge them hourly basis as per freelancer sites... ! ..
Since it's not your primary source of the income. You can be flexible with your h/rate. But I would imagine most of them will prefer bid per project since projects on hourly base usually end up more expansive for the client. Meaning you have get a feel how much you can charge particular client.
