    Hello,
Today my goal was to start on my online portfolio, but when I truly thought about it I realised that I didnt know where to start. Does anyone have any ideas about how to get started with a portfolio? Any examples? I would appreciate any response.
    Thanks

I know the feeling. Been in need of some inspiration myself for the last six months.

OK so it wasn't exactly helpful but some empathy is good for the soul LOL

What kind of portfolio is it ? Photography, web-design, graphic design, illustration, modeling etc
Who is the portfolio for ? new clients, possible employers, college/uni.
How much work is going to be contained within the portfolio ?
What are your favorite folio sites and why ?
How much time do you have ?

These are the kind of questions I would ask myself before I even turn the computer on, the answers will help as you research the various styles and types of folio site to know what is suitable for you.

    Figure out your portfolio
Step 1. What is in your portfolio?
Step 2. Can your portfolio be broken up into categories (print, web, brand-identity, video, etc.)
Step 3. How much do you want to show? 4 pieces per category? Perhaps no categories and only 10 pieces, 100 pieces, everything you've ever made?

Figure out how to show your portfolio
Look around CSS Beauty and other inspiration sites to see what others are doing. Some have full page (1 page one) portfolios) others use slide show pro, others use flickr, others build their own flash and/or javascript presentation module. Remember!!! the presentation of your portfolio pieces is a portfolio piece itself (so I recommend not using something out of a box like slide show pro).

    Just build the damn thing
It wont be perfect and it will evolve over time. Chances are whatever you put up will be better than what is there now -- just just put something up already!

    Simple is better!

Personally i think using grey/pale colours is a smart idea so that the pictures you put on it have punch and give pictures a nice black or white border for real punch.

one most important thing in starting a portfolio site is better no to have flash or heavy graphic.
always right to the point in description.. and put more space for your smple design...

i've seen couple of portfolio site that embed with tons of flash to impress but i just focusing on the flash
and not the content...now that's just not good as a visitor...

It's my personal opinion here, unless you're an artist\photographer, a portfolio of images is a waste of time-- especially if you're a coder. Working examples, code snippets will go a longer way from my experience.
