    How to solve the following problem?

    I am running my web design business, now looking for new designers and programmers. But it is almost impossible to find anybody with high level of quality who will work in office. Everybody wants to establish their own business or to be a freelancer. I really don't know what to do with it and how to attract talented people.
    Does anybody know? :)

    I think the problem with recruiting good webdevelopers is because of the x amount of bad companies out there. In Norway there are literally crawling with really bad designers who actually earn tons of money on it as well.
    If i were to join some of the companies that are hiring right now my design would either get dumbed down, or i would do all the work. I think thats why many wants to be alone :)

    But there are a few good companies though, Fantasy Interactive based in Sweden have recruited one of the worlds greatest designers.
    But as long as you show a good portfolio on your company website i think it should attract good designers as well.

    Or maybe there is too few of em out there ? :)

    Horisont -- One thing that you may have overlooked is your ability to judge talent. As a small business, you don't offer much compared to the big dogs and the truly talented are always going to want more flexibility, bigger names, larger salaries and much more exciting projects. You need to find the talent before it knows it is the talent. It is your job to seek that out, see it, utilize it and capitalize on it before they leave you for a $110,000/yr job at Yahoo! (which you may just never be able to compete with, regardless of your amazing work environment).

    You need to be able to see potential. I've spent much of my time as a hiring manager fighting for candidates. The execs who approve my decisions always second guessed my choices -- it was because they couldn't see past what was on a resume and who the person could become and how they could contribute to our projects. Acknowledge that the potential candidate isn't good at formating resumes, writing cover letters or even performing well during interviews -- fuck, they are web designers and developers not communication majors (make sure you see that and know what to look for and what not to care about).

    Your goal is find the 37 signals' team 5 years before they ever dreamed up Basecamp. You need to find the CSSBeauty owner after he graduated college and before he created this amazing site. You need to see how the 26yr old who loves PHP could be a strong asset to your JSP based CMS platform. Stop trying to hire the best of the best who have already proven themselves to the industry and know their value. Find those who are the next big thing before they become the next big thing and at least know while you can't hire superstars, the superstars of tomorrow used to work for you.

    My advice is really just for the small business owner struggling to find talent -- simply because I feel most looking for talent typically are looking right past the best of it.
