Personal website i have been developing over the past week, comments/opinions/improvements would be greatly appreciated; design/layout/accessbility improvements would also be helpful. At the moment, there is only very few pages ..I am hoping to add more in the coming weeks/months. Along with RSS feeds, comments and whatever else.
Agreed on the Web 2.0 comment - it looks a bit generic.
Do you really need those diagonal lines in the background? Maybe there's something more personal/original you can do instead? You've got that illustration in the top left, why not develop some smaller versions of it, and use them as markers for other sections of the site?
Maybe you just need a wee sprinkling of extra graphics or icons? Eg http://veerle.duoh.com/ (it's a wee bit girly but it is still a good homepage design)
In terms of general message, if I just scan read the page, I don't pick up any kind of clear message - eg what is this site about, what's it's purpose, blah blah.
All the photos of your yourself make it look like your advertising some kind of dodgy service you'd find at the back of the magazine. Unless that is what your site is about?
You know, first I think I have to talk about the biggest positive you've got on your site-- you've got good content. All in all, I get the idea "cute" when I read through it. The illustrated guy at the left side (whom I really like) also adds to it.
I think you've got a good thing going, but one of the hardest parts is something that may have to be considered- where do I look first? It took me a bit of time to get 'used' to the look of it, and my eyes first went to the guy on the left, and then your pics, and last, to the text. The text doesn't stand out too much because the contrast isn't very high, and I think *that* is what you should be showcasing first. I mean, the "Thundercat hair" thing is funny stuff for friends who are checking out your site, so that's the stuff you should consider.
What I usually do is keep asking people around me what they look at first, because I know that after a while of coding/designing, you as the designer start losing the capability. So start with that, and work your way from there. Make a list (like actually write it down) of what you want people to look at first, second, third. Then figure out how you'll have that happen, by checking out other sites for inspiration, etc.
All in all, good work on the coding, and your site passed XHTML validation-- so good job. :)
i just want to give a comment about the thumbnails.
the current website is, you force the image to be a square, which is, didn't look good at all. why don't you create an image thumbnails when you upload the image?
the first thing i always do ony any site, is right clickand view the code. its clean, neat and well commented. very professional looking. as for the look and feel i like it. its has they typical web 2.0 look and feel that most sites tend to have, but hey...thats the fashion :) the only thing that confused me a little was the "enter your voodoo curse" search facility. but i worked it out eventually :)
one more suggestion...instead of the cartoon kyle images changing randomly per page, i woul have each pages displaying a different graphic.
