I'm going to spit my blog into distinct sections for Design/Music/Stuff... so that each can be better tailored to it's content. I might even have wildly different page layouts for each section... an mp3 player within the music section, a random image rotater within stuff, etc etc.
People listening to one of my tracks are unlikely to want to know about SWF Object v2.004b, and vice-versa, so this way I can give them the option to browse straight to /design or /music if they like
I personally like your first concept (gray scale), however there's contrast issues, your text is hard to read. Also typography wise, you seem to be all over the place, I usually like to stick with 1 or 2 fonts, and keep it consistent. I do love the layout (3 columns).
The idea with the different fonts is to have a unique font for each section. So in Stuff, I'll only use Cooper Black for my headings, then in Design, only use a nice 'designed' typeface for headings, etc etc. On the homepage, you'll see all three fonts, which might be a bit messy, as you pointed out, but I think I can make this work with some further thought....
I might also sub-divide the homepage horizontally - so - my work in the top half, and everything else at the bottom. That way in Music, my tracks would be clearly separated from say reviews of an album by a band. And I could include thumbs of my design work on the homepage, AND talk about what other people are doing. This would also do away with the need for a convential 'portfolio' section.
It's handy that I've got 3 sections to work with. I think I'll play up on the number '3' in as many (subtle) ways as I can...
Excuse me if I'm not as lucid as normal, I'm a wee bit hungover today :)
I personally feel you might be putting to much effort into what you consider to be the primary door way into your content. If you three distinct areas of content really share very little of your audience base -- then why have such an aggregated approach? Most of your audience will know how to get into the door way they came there for -- probably not going directly to the homepage. While I understand the logic for larger content distribution sites such as Newsvine or Digg -- does that approach work for you? Why not just have a very simple and clean entry way for your users -- without the clutter of the content? I know content is king, but picture giving the users three options "MUSIC", "DESIGN" and "STUFF".
For your avid user, they will want to get right into what they are there for. For your new user, they probably are more focused on what you mean by "music", "design" and "stuff". Instead of showing the aggregated information of your latest, I'd suggest placing some focus on what those section titles mean. What kind of "design"? Are you taking about painting, architecture, web, print, all?
Just my two cents -- it is a personal site and should reflect your personality more than anything else.
That is a really good point, thank you. It could be a MUCH stronger homepage without so much going on in the coloured stripes.
I still think there should be recent content somewhere, maybe further down the page, and just as headlines.
I could then use the space they used to occupy to explain what 'Design', 'Music' and 'Stuff' are, using either a tagline for each, or a minimal tag cloud, or a combination of both...
PS..
'Design' will be primarily focussed on web design: CSS, Flash, Wordpress plugins and tutorials. With a sprinkling of typography, identity design, etc.
'Music' will showcase my productions, but also review songs, albums and gigs
'Stuff' is for everything else: embedded video clips, photos I've taken, recipes, and other ramblings.
