    Hi all,
I am new to the forum, and I need some direction.

I have been using css/xhtml to create cookie cutter types of template designs:

A banner on tape, a link nav on the left, ads or other stuff on the right and content in the middle.

This method although nothing design wise to write home about has served my purpose until now satisfactorily: permitting me a quick way to clapboard assemble a site.

But now I am stuck: I have a site that is to be a serialization of a book. The content is music notation (png) with a link to a midi file, titles and a few lines of text for each song.

What this is doing is taking square pngs and placing them in the middle of the page. They however take up (and must for readability) most of the width of the page.

My standard design has fallen apart: there isn't room for the navigation panel/buttons I have used unto now.

And even if there was all becomes just to square.

I not being an artist wanted somehow to convey the feeling of the book in the design and hunted for graphics I might use.

This book was originally published in Vilna in 1920, and I was hoping for something that would convey the feeling of Vilnas community before wwii but I didn't find anything royalty free.

So I go back to the drawing board I am looking for suggestions to make the site less square, and a convient way to navigate the site.

I need traditional navigation, but also a finer grain way of moving page by page and between pages.

If need be I can send what I have off list.

    Thanks
    Aaron

    Hey Aaron,

do you have any comps done yet? I can't offer any constructive criticism based on a description alone. My suggestion about the page layout would be to break it into thirds (top, middle, bottom) and focus on the content. The nav really only needs to be on the top (some where you'd expect to find it) and the rest is content.

Heck you can even drop your subnav either into drop-down menus or make it part of the footer.

Again this is pretty high level as I haven't seen the actual sizes of the image for content or what the minimum page size is.

    hope any of this helps.

    regards,

    Craig

Your design should not worry about what can be done via CSS and HTML. Work on the creation and let it be created after.
