I'm a designer and looking for some work, and I believe there's a topic on this already, but how do you, yourself get your freelance work? How do most people get their freelance work? If it's mostly through word-of-mouth, how often do you get freelance work? Thanks.
If you are just starting out then I suggest going where everyone went when they first started out -- your local Craig's List. You'll out grow it quickly, but great place to start!
Another approach would be to market yourself to an established designer who may be turning down smaller projects because he/she has too much work (yes, that happens - when it rains, it pours). For instance, I specialise in front-end web UI development based on established and approved mocks and wireframes, and I rarely have time to develop Photoshop mocks for approval when I have a client that only has ideas, and no visuals. I therefor request a designer I know to create several mocks for approval before I can code the mocks into a working site or CMS theme in XHTML/CSS and integrate to the backend.
I assume that you have a good website that showcases your work. Point us to it and if/when there is work to be done, people will think of you. I assume that you have designs to showcase just what you can do.
You could try the advertise your services on sitepoint.com. I used to just post on forums that had marketplace sections, now I find that people get in touch with me through PM's on forums and IM. I never have time for freelance work now so if you've got a good portfolio I can reccomend people to you if they ask me.
I've thought about sitepoint.com, although $10 is quite a bit, especially since when I look at the view counts, they don't have many. Do you think people usually get work from advertising on sitepoint.com?
Jmz - that would be nice, could you recommend me? I'll show you my portfolio if you would like to decide.
