I host and manage a site for a small training company who were recently taken over by a larger company. As happens, it hasn't been a happy merger and my client has decided to move on to pastures new. It appears that the website was not listed in the sale and the new company want to buy it from him.

Bearing in mind the site is for a 2 man band, the site is currently ranked top 10 based on it's target searches on the major search engines for, gets around 800 visitors a month(over 600 month via searches) and at least 20 enquiries via the online form and I am told a healthy number that telephone the office.

Assuming there are no legal issues, what is the domain worth?

(*edit I forgot to add, I understand it's only worth what someone is prepared to pay. Any other tips or experiences most welcome. )

Simple stated, domain names are worth whatever people are willing to pay for them. I've tried out GoDaddy's Domain Name Express Appraisal, and that seemed to be a shot in the dark. It may be worth giving their Certified Domain Appraisal a shot though since that has an actual person review the info.

If the domain name is important to the company's operations, then there's more value to it. A high PageRank could also help increase its value.

Thanks John, I will have a look at that link you posted.

It is actually becoming a tricky situation. My existing client is asking me to advise them but realistically I would like to see the site sold as I would get some work out of it. Think my best bet is keep my head down, speak when spoken too and make sure the fence is strong enough to sit on!

If you can get a new domain on a new untainted IP address, as long as you can get the content up and do proper SEO (no tricks beyond writing relevant content and using clean code), you will get the same visibility and traffic in no time. In just over one year, I have been able to cultivate our business website to about 800-1200 visitors per day (80% from search engines), and got to PR5 within 6 months (waiting for a good bump any time from now). I documented the actions I took in the first 6 months of life/SEO: SEO your new website to create a brand and invite search engine traffic effectively

I would not pay lots of money for an existing domain for the traffic it gets because that can be accomplished with some good hard work. Also, an old domain has branding implications because customers will always associate it with the old owner (at least the returning ones). I hope I am staying onpoint.
