Please tell me which site you prefer, and why. And anything you might like or dislike. I can't make up my mind.

I like 3, but I think the off state on the navigation needs a little work. I feel like it shouldn't have any texture to it.

Personally I like nr.1 the best, too.
Nr1 is too much of a contrast between the content and the stripes on either side.
Nr3 is too busy with the diagonal stripes.

I like number 3 the best without the stripes though.

#1 just speaks 'quality music' to me. The curved bottom almost creates an acoustic element to the layout.

I like number 1 as well but it doesnt show correctly in IE6. The middle graphic gets pushed a few pixels down.

urgghhh!! i hate IE6!! haha, i'm kidding (only partially), but the links are all just flat images. they haven't been coded at all yet. and here's something interesting. I posted the same request in the Adobe forum, with every single response saying #2. the same goes for average, non-technical people I ask.

Yet everyone here and other css-interested parties all like #1 or #3. why do you suppose that is? i wonder if its just a css trend that appreciates the full-width "bars" that are so prevalant in css-driven sites as of late. it wouldn't seem as cool if your average user doesn't find it as attractive.

It's simple, really. You've asked a subjective question of the site design. It's really not the right question to ask. The right questions are "Does this design enforce the company's brand? Is the site clear, thorough, and easily navigable? When a user visits this site for the first time, do we present them with an easy way to find what they are looking for? Does this design highlight the proper content?"

Everyone has their own tastes, and perhaps even different types of people have their own collective tastes. "Like or dislike?" does nothing for you, as a designer, and I wouldn't waste my time looking for it.

Good advice Petty. I will, in the future, ask questions more like the ones you have mentioned above. But that still doesn't answer the question of the identical answers within each site's community.
