Does anyone know good personal SmartCard software that locks the system if a SmartCard is not present and asks for a SmartCard at the BIOS level?
My Acer TravelMate 8104 came with one, but it is horrendous. I wish it came with a fingerprint reader like Samsung and IBM laptops.

I just hate typing passwords.

PS: I'm aware that Windows XP has SmartCard support, but that must be enabled on domain server, and this is a personal computer that does not belong to a domain.

Please do not mentione software from 360 Degree Web. That is what comes from Acer.

Thank you.

Damn, this crap is a piece of shite. PlatinumPas, the pre-boot authentication seems to work okay. But there probably is a workaround to bypass it. You may not be able to boot, but you can read the files if you take the hard drive out.

PlatinumSecret, the crap that is supposed to keep it secure once it is in Windows is pathetic. It says "Encrypt". You click on it, and it says "Encrypting/Decryping folder." Is it encrypting or is decrypting. If you remove the smart card, a pixalated screen comes up asking to reinsert the smart card. But, you can still give it commands. I can shut down. I can launch gmail. I can do ctrl+alt+del( though I don't get acces to it). So, if you know the placement of things, and you can fly blind, you can still use it. Maybe, you can even shut down the screen. It's bloody pathetic.

The uninstaller doesn't work, so I installed the Ashanpoo Uninstaller that takes snapshots of before and after and removes everything (it's much better to use this, than the uninstallers that come with software since most of the time they don't remove everything). But this one seems to remove nothing.

I'm sorry that you've had problems finding good SmartCard software. PlatinumSecret is pretty terrible. Have you tried using a password USB key? You could disable your smart card hardware and use that to secure your laptop instead.
