The Dreamweaver's 8.0 FTP client is very convenient because it uploads dependencies. It also uploads a file and opens the browser for you to view it. However, it uses 100% CPU, it's slow, it drains my battery, and makes the fan sound like a jet engine. This has been the case even in Dreamweaver 2.0. That was like 7 years ago. I don't understand why they don't fix it. Does anyone know workarounds?

GoLive's CS2 FTP client is slow too, but only uses 2-4% CPU. However, GoLive is a piece of junk from top to bottom.

This forces me to use SmartFTP 2.0, which is really nice, but does not know how to upload dependencies since it does not have a HTML/CSS parsing engine.

I still don't understand how Adobe was allowed to take over Macromedia? Who got bribed. This is the worst thing to happen to Web Design since the browser wars. I hope that they don't add any GoLive code to Dreamweaver 9.0. Otherwise, Dreamweaver 9.0 is going to be an unstable piece of junk. The only products that Adobe makes that are good are Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. The rest are total failures (the current, and the discountinued).

Wow, I haven't really had any problems with DW's ftp client and the new background ftp feature is a great improvement. I have to agree (kind of) in that I'm not sure the merger will be good for customers in the long run - one thing that should please you is the demise of GoLive though.

Why would one applaud the demise of GoLive? Have you tried GoLive CS2?

I have. It sucks. Slow, error messages out of nowhere. It can't remember things. Screw it.

    Hi!

I would not trust DW for this job. I try to use it in a past but It screwed couple time couple website and you know I just like the old way and don't use any synchronization ftp options. I still prefer to use WS FTP Pro. Seems to me every time you upgrade to a new version of software like DW or Photoshop it uses more resources from you machine. If you ask me I think software vendor doing it on purpose so we upgraded our computers as well.

    Cheers, DS

OK, fair enough Spooky, but Dreamweaver also sucks. It's Microsoft-esque bloatware in my opinion.

I still do most of my coding in an increasingly aging Homesite 5.

I'm sticking with TextPad and FileZilla.

    one more for FileZilla here!
However I find SOME of Dreamweaver's functions helpful. Leaving aside code coloring that is done by most editors, I think the Replace All in In "Entire website" is quite helpful while working on static pages that the customer suddenly needs modified as "bulk".

I'm also in support of DW's poor power management and high CPU usage rant. It does have its advantages, but it's just not up to the task when handling a low amount of files. It just drains power and performance useless.

    @ dimitryseliv
I wouldn't go as far as stating that the programming team is doing this intentionately, or this being a marketing trick, it's probably just down to some sloppy coding on the methods used to do the checking on file versions.

I vouch for SmartFTP. It's really good.

I have never said that DW is perfect. I ranted on it. But GoLive really blows.

For FTP I use WS_FTP Pro and Filezilla. Both are recommended.

I am for Homesite 5 and Smart FTP. Both create a good combination while working with clients. Quick changes and uploading. One thing about DW is its easy functionality. Homesite 5 lacks lot of features, but its good when sticking to basic programming IMHO.

    Admans.

Topstyle 3 is not a bad substitute for those of you who still use Homesite 5. I sometimes use it rather than HS depending on what machine I'm working on.

    Hi dudes,

I've spent many hours trying to find an alternative to DW because of its AWFUL FTP.

My best bet so far is Notepad++ http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net and its ftp plugin http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/download.php
With this, opening a remote file, editing it and placing it back on the server are all instant.
The only drawback is that there's no wysiwyg pane.
