Increasing your income doing freelance design is something that most designers are doing whether full time or part time. If you do good work, are reasonably fast, and work at a good price you will surely receive lots of offers. Theres no trick to that it just takes time. But for some of us it gets to the point where the freelance work is turning into a a fulltime gig due to the volume of work. So then the question is, is it better to only take on work you can personally do. Or do you take on as much as possible and outsource portions or excess.

This is a great question marlon. My opinion is that it really depends. Were you hired as a designer or a project manager? If it's more of the latter, then I don't see why it's a big deal, in the end, it's your job to make sure the project is successful and on-time, so outsourcing doesn't seem like such a bad idea. However, if your client wants you specifically to design the website, then you should at least pour a bit of your creative soul into the project.

I guess the question is, are you in the for the money, or for the work?

I usually end up doing a lot of the outsourced work :-)
But yeah, it basically boils down to what envisean said, are you in it for the money or for the work? Sometimes you just have to be selective and pass up projects that you don't have time for.

I guess with me - I am in it for the work and the money. I do quite a bit of freelance but I outsource as little as possible, and I never outsource any design. I sometimes outsource PHP development or even the frontend code. But most of the time I'm just spreading the wealth :)

What I'm really saying is when is it time to stop freelancing and start building your own company with a staff and the whole 9.

Right now you just freelancing no string attached, projects comes and goes but if you run you own business and want it be successful then it's 24/7 process specially in a beginning. I don't want to discourage you or anything like that just to make it clear what you getting into.
Well I'm not sure where you located but you should remember that running you business is not easy. You need to pay more taxes plus to pay your employers every month.
Let's assume you are located in US then advantage of running business is you can write off a some expanses from you taxes which makes big difference at the end.

But if you feel that you at the point that you have as much projects to keep busy full time developer then
go for it since usually it's cheaper to hire somebody then outsource it outside.

    Best, DS
