I have been playing with web/graphic design for some time and have begun considering giving it a try. But at the moment I’m not sure whether my portfolio is strong enough to work freelance? A sample of my best projects can be seen at http://butwhydesign.carbonmade.com/ Tanks.
It looks like you've made a couple posters and one website (not including your own). I can't link to the website from your portfolio to review the design or code more closely. I did look at the code on your portfolio...what's with the tables?
Here's some free advice: Build up your portfolio by making a few WordPress themes; build a website for your buddy who needs a site to show off his photos, budding ceramics business or punk band. Build out your own portfolio site with a blog.
You don't have enough in your portfolio at the moment to attract customers who would be willing to pay you much.
If you mean carbonmade when referring to Frederik's own site, I think it's an online portfolio site for members to register and upload details of their work, much like deviant art.
However, I have to agree that there are not enough examples, and further diversity may help, at the moment, taking on free projects such as those mentioned by adjustafresh and maybe local charities will be beneficial. I think the phrase is something like "throwing out a sprat to catch a mackerel"?
I second that... you need to have a few more website examples; and in since anyone can get an Adobe product to slice anything into a website these days, if you can hand-code, please hand-code your demos, and stay far away from tables except the one where you sit to work.
While waiting for a good project to come your way, you can showcase your knowledge and passion by maintaining a blog where you can cover your web design interest in detail. It will not only generate traffic for your site, but it will act as a living demo of your knowledge. If you just discovered how to solve a problem, write about it. Even if you are not inventing the wheel, your unique challenge and approach to the solution will make someone else's day.
