I am trying to hire a designer for a long term freelancer contract (4-6 months)

However the agency he came through want the same day rate fee eventhough it is a long term contract which I think is unrealistic, but as I have never hired a freelancer long term I am not sure.

Anybody here had experience with something like that and got some advice?

shouldn't the agency receive a one-time finding fee from you? in my humble opinion they're trying to rip you off.
is it really necessary to use an agency (meaning how hard is it to find a decent freelance designer)?

I think your issue is with the fact that the long-term contractor is coming from an agency as opposed to an independent contractor. You are going to have more negotiating room with an independent contractor than with an agency.

Most independent contractors will be willing to negotiate terms on long-term contracts. The argument with respect to whether a freelancer can lower his rate simply because you offer long term contracts are highly debatable.

I failed to mention this is a specific designer who have worked with us before, that is why I am not going down the route of finding another one... just yet anyway

No, in my experience most agencies take a day rate fee and that is why I wondered whether anybody else had any experience with this on a log-term basis as I hope it would be different.
