I'm trying to explain to some of my coworkers when one would choose to use streaming media vs. when one would choose progressive download. However, I suck at articulation (which is why I work with pictures and not text). Does anyone know of a good resource online that clearly illustrates when to use one or the other?
Or if someone wants to take a stab at explaining it themselves, that'd be cool too.
With streaming media there is no file being downloaded so there are 2 benefits: 1) It is much harder to save a copy to the clients machine 2) You only deliver as much as the user watches, so if they only watch 5 seconds that is all that you deliver.
With progressive downloads a file is being saved to the machine so the benefits are: 1) The user can save a copy 2) the user can fast forward or rewind since the clip is fully downloaded much faster than the play rate. 3) It is cheaper to deliver Flash via Progressive Download since Adobe has extra licensing costs for Streaming Flash and the Flash Media Server.
