I'm sure this have been discussed before . . . or maybe not ? Not long ago I saw a showcase of websites on smashingmagazine.com. They posted lots of flash sites, looks all nice and I was pretty impressed. But I can also see that lots of people have a big NO NO towards flash . . because of usability and page ranking issues ? I wanted to know if someone can give me some direction to use flash or not. I know its depending on the case ur working on. But what do people general prefer? only use flash if u really need to, or want to showcase a product and impress visitors. Sometimes I think it doesnt really matter . . because almost everyone got flash plugin installed, but maybe im being to naive now.

Hope to hear opinions from ur guys

    thnx

While it is a case by case basis, this is a CSS forum. I would be very surprised if you had anyone say that they preferred flash.

I don't know about that ... I believe Flash has its place. For example if you are designing a magazine site whose focus is photography -- only flash is really going to give you amazing image quality at a reasonable size. I think like all things we do ... you have to be responsible. Just like with JavaScript, make sure it degrades!! Use JavaScript to do that. Don't create two different sites, just have HTML equivalents of your flash content to display in the event the user can't view the flash.

I would never advocate an "all flash" site, but don't be afraid of flash by any means.

    I agree.

I guess it comes down to making sure you can serve the content to as many as possible.

If you have a Flash element presenting your latest work make sure you also have an html link to a portfolio section with html links to your work

I think what the others were trying to say was, an don't go full blown flash (unless it serves your purposes of displaying a product in a certain way and really needs to be that way), but integration of flash objects are perfectly fine as long as they're used properly. i.e. not for the menu system, but perhaps the banner.

I personally still enjoy full flash websites, but I also advocate usability and accessibility to all my clients, but they certainly are fun to view! It does get hard when you have clients that want to break out of the box, but mostly refer to flash elements (animations, rotating menu systems, etc.).

    good luck with your site!
