You should be ashamed of yourself BABYBEN................................. A person is seeking a help because he is new to this design field and u type of people are suggesting u type of things...i think u do the same what u have suggested.
I would also put a news section, with your latest company news briefs and links to the full article.
Links to most commonly used pages (as suggested), including company email. Also include a large support area, where employees can ask for help, get articles and company regulations, etc.
Publicly Traded companies have a stock quote on their Intranets.
Depending on the company, a project management area to track/manage your projects each employee is working on.
You are clearly VERY new to this line of work, so I'll be gentle. The question that you posed is impossible for any of us to give you a truly helpful answer because you have not provided us with any information about the people who will be using the intranet. Without understanding the users' needs, how can any of us give you a meaningful answer?
Consider this analogy: Navireet, tomorrow is my best friend's birthday, please tell me what to buy as a birthday gift.
Without knowing anything about my friend, how old the person is, their interests, their gender, their nationality, etc., you would be at a loss for suggesting an appropriate gift. Only by asking questions to help you better understand my friend's interests, background and desires would you begin to be able to suggest a gift that my friend would appreciate.
P.S. - If the company that needs an intranet is Penthouse Magazine, I think that Babyben's suggestion is perfectly valid. You are, after all, building an intranet for the users. If a picture of a nude woman fits the business objectives, corporate culture and users' needs, then why not?
