I am about to begin building a site using probably Textpattern or maybe Expression Engine. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on really nice calendar solutions that exist. Anyone?

    Thanks in advance,
    Brad

Do you really need one? Is it necessary to visualize your events in a calendar form? The reason I ask, is that you could save yourself a whole lot of trouble by steering clear from the whole thing altogether. I've found a list of events with good titles and descriptions combined with microformats to be a better solution in most cases.

I really, truly hate every single calendar application that's currently out there.

Would you be using the calendar just for displaying data, for entering it or both?

Google Calendar maybe.... not open source, but easy way to enter information, and it gives you an xml feed (others probably already have parsers and whatnot for it).

    bhaynes ,

I've used the EE calendar a few times. It's easy to use and well documented. -- http://expressionengine.com/docs/modules/weblog/calendar.html

I like using the mini calendar format along with a list of events.

I've used JEvents for Joomla and Kieran's calendar for Wordpress, both pretty useful and easy to customize.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. And to answer your question kari, I am completely with you on the events list. I've used it several times. But this client want users to be able to see the dates, as well as display the list of events, as well as have the ability to comment on an event. Maybe I can build something that just shows there is an event on the date, without actually displaying text. Then on click the screen could slide down via jquery to the chosen date. Hmm, that would actually be pretty cool. Now just to make it happen...

    Thanks again!

The one time I found a calendar to be useful was when I had recurring events to display all the time. I used the Keith Devens' php calendar, with a slight modification. An orange background for a date with a lesson, for example, was handy enough.
