I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a solution to this problem, or if there's a standard way of doing this. Was unable to find any solutions on the web, it's a difficult thing to search for though...

Basically I need a way of letting a user manage the order of a list of items within a content management system.

    E.g. A list of pages...

    1) Our Services
    2) About Us
    3) Contact Us

I would want to allow the user to move 'About Us' to the bottom of the list by clicking an arrow, dragging it, or by whatever means.

The best I've been able to come up with so far is to give each item a position number which the list would be ordered by, then let the user change this number - but this presents issues like a new item being created then the user wanting to put it between two already existing and positioned items.

    Anyone got any bright ideas?

    Thanks.

Seems like you would want to do something like this: http://wiki.script.aculo.us/scriptaculous/show/SortableListsDemo

There are a million different versions out there

Do you mean something like this one? The demo is pretty old, but I'll send you the source if you want it.

Wow, I like it. Simpler than I thought it was, I guess :)

That source would be nice, Kari.

How easy do your reckon it would be to mod one of these scripts so you could move lower level sub-items, so you could drag a top level element to another to make it a sub-item?

    Thanks guys.

I think that's already done with sortable trees in scriptaculous.
