    Hey everyone

Ok i have been on Apples website this morning particularly this page: http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/features.html and i was wondering how this done. i.e menu on the left and the content on the right changes when the buttons are clicked?

Thanks for any help with this :)

Looks like they're just using javascript to show/hide different divs.

Cute, but... this functionality breaks the back button paradigm for inexperienced users.

Alot of UI gurus would say that what Apple is doing on that page is a no no. :D

I wouldn't consider it "wrong" i would just consider it a not good use of practice, although as long as without javascript the page degrades gracefully and doesn't interupt the flow of users getting to content in the best manner possible then i dont see it as a big issue.

You should always build a site with the intention of not using javascript, then when everything works without it and is not a necessity for the functionality of a site, then start adding javascript to tweak your site for better presentation.

I am not completely agree with above comment, some time you don't have any idea to show your page more usable and fast. this technique save lot's of http request.

I also use this feature with flash in one of my client http://www.svefleet.com/Home.aspx. After loading flash you can control your page content with flash.

need any clarification mail me at Pankaj@pankajpandey.com

    Pank - lovely.

How does a user who is interested in F-150 Composite Toppers (as seen in your Flash menu) bookmark that information?

Using Flash the way you did eliminates anyone's ability to bookmark the content they are interested in; it eliminates the ability for a search engine to spider content within the Flash area, and those people who don't have a Flash player, or the correct version of the Flash player... well, they're just our of luck completely.

Other than that - nice job.

    Hey everyone

Thanks for the replies,i have learnt some useful info in here.

Ok so here is another question for you, i have a lot of info to put on a single page, which isn't a problem, but i read some where that user's dont like scrolling to far down a page, this isn't a problem i have myself i dont really mind how long a page is, but is this something that you guys have heard and is it true?

    Thanks again :)

That's just nonsense. There might be a little bit of truth in saying that some of them don't like it. The screen is a page, not a box with limited vertical space.

I believe that it's not so much a problem anymore. But really you just need to take into account your audience. If you are deigning for the elderly, you don't want them to have to scroll alot, or read small text, etc. So just design for your audience.

I think really the only thing is horizontal scrolling. That's still weird for most people.

The alternative to pages that scroll is additional pages. Additional pages = more clicks. Not saying more clicks are necessarily bad. This is yet another myth of the web.

There are two camps here - Some (especially people who deal with e-commerce) may say, "I don't want users to have to click more than twice to get to the content they need!" Others would argue that more clicks/page views are attractive to potential advertisers and lead to increased ad revenue.

    Darren-
I was looking for that article to post, but I couldn’t remember which site I read it on. Thanks for the reminder.
