You mean "Emeril" himself? That's the only guy I see on the site...he tends to like to do that in general, btw ;-) Emeril and other celebrities keep a pretty tight hold on there image, so it probably came from the FoodNetwork image bank, or Emeril's - if he retains the usage rights.

I'm pretty sure the massive marketing team behind the Emeril brand has supplied the web team with no shortage of Emeril photos!

Interestingly, I did some freelance work earlier this year for a presidential candidate. It was like pulling teeth to get the campaign to allow me to use any photos of the candidate.

There is a lot of art and magic in finding perfect imagery. Just takes a lot of time/research. The goal is to hunt through stock photo sites and find something unique, reasonably priced and awesome! A real web designer can spot a stock photo a million miles away -- because we spend so much time hunting around on stock sites, we know them all. Big companies like PNC Bank use stock a lot in their marketing efforts.

One of the best things about working with clients like Discovery Channel or National Geographic is the amazing surplus of imagery -- it is always amazing quality. They make design easy, because the images are so powerful, engaging and exciting.

I make all my own graphics and take my own pictures, or have my brother do it (he is a professional photographer). TO me designing great sites is about building them from the ground up, I avoid stock imagery as much as possible. Sometimes it is necessary due to budget/swiftness/etc. but I typically encourage the use of all original material. People that find great images and then build the site around those images, in my opinion are not true designers. Being inspired is one thing, relying on images to make your design work is entirely another.

@zinsk, so when you get a client that needs a website for a company in another country -- what do you do? You fly out and take pictures? Perhaps you are just charging much more than the rest of us -- but there is no way that is feasible.

I think the real question here is ... where do you find amazing graphics/images when the client isn't willing to pay for them or allow time to take them/find them. That is the reality of most web projects in my freelance experience.

There is nothing wrong with using stock photography -- the issue is when it is used irresponsibly. That or when shitty images are selected. When you see a site that has tacky overused stock -- the issue isn't that stock was used, the issue is that the "designer" picked bad imagery.

This website has provided me with a great deal of graphics inspiration.

@mringlein, looks like a pinched a nerve, sorry about that, it wasn't my intention. The only out of country client I have had was in Canada, for a bed and breakfast in Vancouver BC. The client provided the photos for me in that scenario. She was a terrible photographer, and we had to have her take the shots a few times, however in the end the product was fantastic and she was very happy.

As for your "typical" scenario of your personal freelance projects, I understand there are times when stock photography is necessary and I am not saying it is "wrong". My argument was when people find a picture and build the design around them rather then building the design and finding the pictures that fit. I have seen many Designers in my 16 years of working in the field who use stock imagery or stock illustration as a crutch rather then a resource.

Please don't take my intentions of posting as being to create trouble or offend. I came here to make friends and have discussion with other Designers, not to make enemies.

@zinsk --> No, its cool. I know what you mean and where you are coming from. I just think the concept of stock is a great idea, but it is unfortunate that so many "designers" don't use it right or abuse it. I am guilty of it also -- because I can't do awesome bad a$$ icons. So either I have to have someone of the team do it or have to hunt around the web to find some stock that gets the job done (very hard thing to do).

We have a photographer out of Philly we use, but it just isn't cost effective for many projects. I wish I could though!
