Ok so I had this idea for a CSS competition and was wondering if it was any good or had been done before...

Back in the day when people coded graphics demos I know they used to have competition with a limit on the size of the code.

So what about a CSS design competition with a tiny limit on the size of the CSS file, let's say 3k... you would invite people to design layouts, but all for the same page (like on Zen Garden)

    Thoughts?

its been done before but zengarden does not get updated very often

I wouldnt mind looking at it if the code was proper and semantic.

Just need to find a way to make it different from zengarden.. like perhaps css only styling, no images or something like that.. would make it much more challenging for design purposes

Yeah I forgot to mention images. Perhaps no images at all? That would make it much harder I agree, and could be more stimulating in terms of results...

Well, if wouldn't be too hard to make a CSS low in file size since you can take advantage of selectors.

However, if this was to be IE compliant, classes and IDs would have to be given, etc, making things like

    li+li:before { content: " : "; } impossible.

Oh well. I would take part in this.

So "FF-only" would be an interesting angle on this... hmmm... stokes beard in time honoured thinking-man style...

Wait until IE7 is released. There ought to be better support for selectors, pseudo-classes, etc.

It could be a cool excercise.

That could work. I'm looking for ideas for my new blog so it can wait a wee while... good to get some input on what would/wouldn't work first though!

sounds nice to have some sort of competition. AFAIK "css shuffle" here should go by a simmilar principle, but I don't think size was an issue. I'm still waiting eagerly for the launch yet it would be nice to go with a competition of this sort in paralell. I like the idea, 3stripe. You'd have at least one contender ;)

I've been wondering about how to actually show the competition entries... looks like http://micropublicantes.com/zengarage could be a nice solution to this :-)

    Next step, finalise the rules....

    1. should it be a FF only competition (benefits: promotes FF, allows for clever CSS, and therefore more interesting results) or a standards compliant competition (benefits: promotes valid markup, downside: might not be so interesting).

    2. are images allowed? could be: no images, 3k of images, or use a presupplied set of gifs with transparent backgrounds.

I'm verring on the side of a FF only competiton with no images, or possibly a presupplied set.... thoughts?

so.. i want to get started with this soon...

    i'm thinking:

    1. modern browsers only (firefox {and camino etc}, safari, opera, ie7)
    2. 3k limit for the css file
    3. 3k limit for the images
    4. url: threeek.com/threekay.net/3kcss.com/3kstyle.com

    what do you think?

Not to get into too many details but if you say my "CSS file" is limited to 3k, what is to stop me from having a 1K CSS file and a 40k HTML file with a lot of in-line styles? And... probably stating the obvious .... but just be careful how people (internationally) refer to your contest, "3k" or "three k" are A LOT different than "KKK".

Definitly love the idea! promotes responsible design -- looking forward to it.

First rule of 3kstyle - no inline styles! lol.

Erm that is a fair point. But the html markup will be the same for everyone, with a style switcher to choose the different stylesheets.

And 3k is the way to go I think...

How would everyone feel about having a little category on the side for XHTML Mobile using css for handheld media, with the same 3k limit, of course?

Size matters, when you are coding anything mobile. In my opinion, it would be nice to have some css beauty in my pocket as well. So, what I'd propose is this: 1) minimal imagery, if any 2) the same development tool for everyone. This can be decided on later, but something like the Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit, or any app that everyone can download would seem like the most obvious choice.

Also, as a side note, someone with a little bit more street cred' than myself could try to get a company like Nokia, Motorola or even Opera to give a couple of prizes for the winners (and to their own favorites, as well). Regardless of the outcome, I could use what little connections I have to the corporate world to lobby the idea, if this catches on.

I hadn't even heard of it before I read some article about that on oreilly... Half an hour later I had a weather app running on my really old Nokia. The css is the same, and so is the xml, almost.

Here's the article that got me going: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/wireless/2004/02/06/mobile_browsing.html

Also, check out the Opera simulator at www.opera.com/products/mobile/operamini/demo.dml
Just point it to any website and find out how they fit a mobile screen. I haven't tried downloading the java file yet, as I have no idea if that's even allowed, but it might be possible to set it up on a desktop so that it wouldn't require the test site to be online.
