Here's another "what's the best CMS" type question.

I realize, of course, that there really isn't a "best" out there, but there may be a couple that do what I'm thinking.

I've potentially got several clients in the same "niche", if you will. They aren't competitors, but they are independent. They all need basically the same functionality from their sites, which I hope to build for them. I was thinking that I could create a sample site, with a few different skins or themes, and then duplicate that site quickly and with little fuss when a new client comes on board and needs a website.

I don't want them to all look the same; but things like membership, blogs, calendar, newsletters, etc. will be needed by all the clients in varying degrees.

But here's my ACTUAL dilema: I don't want the nightmare of updating 10 or 12 sites every time there's an update to the base cms; that might become cumbersome pretty quickly. I'd like to just update one (the "base") cms, and that would update the rest since they are all derived from that base cms.

Is that possible? If so, which cms' do that? Did my question make sense at all?

    Thanks!
    Bill

Sounds like you're looking for a platform that can power all of the sites rather than discreet installations of the same CMS for each client, nes pas? Is that what you mean by "the nightmare of updating..."?

You could actually do this with one installation of ExpressionEngine. It has all of the features that you're looking for, and you would certainly be able to make a custom design for each client. I think that the problem you would encounter is the fact that all of your clients would need to share a domain e.g. www.domain.com/client01, www.domain.com/client02, www.domain.com/client03, etc.

I am unaware of a platform that would centrally power multiple websites across different domains, but if anyone knows of one, I'd love to hear about it.

(Paid) membership, (multi user) blogs, calendar/events, newsletters, and more are easily configured with Drupal. Skins/themes are also plug and play.

Regarding your centralised update question: Will you control the hosting of the sites? If so, each of your client sites can be a 'multi site' based off one Drupal install. Updating the main install, will update all the sites. e.g. I am running http://neemtree.com.au, http://alibrary.neemtree.com.au, and http://drupal.neemtree.com.au all off the same code base. (Take a look at the last one for a feel of using/administering Drupal).

With Drupal 6, 'installation profiles' are supposed to be made easier to use as well. That feature may be of interest to you.

    Thanks for your comments!

I'll have to look into both expression engine and Drupal; the part about centrally powering different domain names is pretty crucial...I'd love to know if that's possible!

Since I posted here I've been looking around, and I've found dotNetNuke...it seems to have the multiple domain capability. Anybody familiar with it (will it do what I'm looking for)? I realize that M$ haters are probably shining up their flamethrowers right about now...:-)

As long as you control the hosting of the multiple domain names, Drupal's multisite meets your needs. In your Drupal instal''s sites folder creating directories for each site enables multidomain/multisite:

    e.g. folder name Drupal multisite
    sites/drupal.neemtree.com.au http://drupal.neemtree.com.au
    sites/neemtree.com.au.multisite http://neemtree.com.au/multisite
    sites/someotherdomain.com http://someotherdomain.com

    HTH.

Ahhh...that "sites/someotherdomain.com" seems to be what I'm looking for.

Thanks a lot neemtree; I'll look into that further!
