    I'd like to do something similar to the lefthand nav menu at http://www.backbase.com/, which opens up and expands as you click on each section...

    Are there any downloadable demos of something similar that I could use as a starting point??? Would it be hard for someone with limited javascript experience?

    you could make that very easily using moofx

    they have tutorials and examples on the site to help you figure it out

    Cool will do. I saw Moo a while back but totally forgot about it.

    Does it degrade gracefully in the oldie browsers?

    it works in every browser browser Ie 5.01+ I do believe

    but yes, with javascript disabled it will just show the divs
