1.Do you think that creativity is part of human nature or is it something that must be nurtured and learned? Please explain your answer.
Both. I believe everybody can think creatively. Creativity manifests itself in many different ways, not just "artistically". For part two, ANYTHING must be nurtured and learned. Ability takes you only so far. Even those who are "prodigy's" (and I hate the implications of that word) still practice and sharpen their abilities. Tiger Woods has a natural talent for golf, he could probably hit the ball naturally better then most of us could hit it after years of practice, but Tiger Woods still has a coach and a caddy to help him stay on top of the game. (I am not a golfer, so he may have ten coaches, I don't know, but I know he has at least one because I read an interview)
v 2.What made you decide to follow a creative career choice (though possibly risky) rather than something more stable?
I have always loved the creative process, and the jobs I work on are more like puzzles that need solutions rather then a chore or "work".
3.What is your inspiration? How has personal experience influenced your creativity?
I am inspired by many things, I once got an idea for a logo based on the natural worn in crease on a leather shoe where it bends at the toe. I am always looking at the world from a Graphic Designer perspective. What I mean by that is I tend to see patterns and shapes that others don't see due to the nature of my daily work. I also carry a camera with me where ever I go and take pictures of patterns, shapes and textures that appeal to me. Sometimes I use a picture that I took years earlier to create a background texture for a catalog or website, it's a constant process of searching.
4.What is your favorite creation? Please explain why you selected this one.
HAHA, it's not one of mine, Mel Chin (modern sculptor) did an installation piece at the Denver Art Museum that was AMAZING. Of my own pieces, I don't have a favorite to be honest, they are all kind of my babies and I do the best I can on all of them.
5.What do you wish to accomplish with your art?
I won't fool myself, I am in it for the money. That sounds cold and heartless, but I do what I do because I am good enough at it to provide myself and my family a comfortable living. I do enjoy what I do and go at each project with everything I have in me, but in the end I feed little mouths :)
6.How do you know when a piece or project is finished and needs no additonal work?
A Graphic (or Web) Designer knows that a piece is done not when nothing can be added but when nothing more can be taken away.
7.Have you ever been faced with negative feedback? How was this reflected in your work, if at all?
This is like asking if I have ever taken a breath. Negative feedback is as engrossed in the creative fields and if you take one job as a designer that didn't come from your Grandmother, you will encounter it. It has not reflected on my work except in extreme cases. There does come a point where you need to cut bait, do exactly what the client wants, collect payment and never work for them again :)
8.What impact do you think that commercialism and the media has had on your work? Is this good or bad?
Commercialism can only help us. As the mentality of have a website, have a brand, have a logo, etc. perpetuates itself into our culture we will only have more work to do. Is it good or bad, that's rhetorical, there is good and bad that can and will come of it.
9.Are you a fan of cartoons? If so, what is your favorite one?
I love cartoons, and my favorite is Bloom County by Berke Breathed.
10.What is playing in your CD player/Ipod right now?
Nothing, it's at home.
11.If you had to be any of these things, which would you like to be?
a) a member of the opposite sex, b) a clock, c) a pair of shoes, d) a duck Please explain your choice.
A duck because I love the water and tend to go fly fishing when not chained to deadlines.
12.If you only had 24 hours to live, how would you spend your day?
1.Do you think that creativity is part of human nature or is it something that must be nurtured and learned? Please explain your answer. All humans born with a high percentage of creativity (and you can see it at childhood period). Through the time, and depending how we are stimulated, this creativity skill can grow higher, and if its not well stimulated, there are many techniques to shake it up.
2.What made you decide to follow a creative career choice (though possibly risky) rather than something more stable? I've read the Steve Jobs commencement speech at Standford University, and this phrase changed my life: "You've got to find what you love. [...] Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking". I've always loved art and design, but spent almost 14 years of my life working in a "stable" job as executive assistant, till the economic crisis arrived. That's when I realised that nothing in this life is stable, so what the deal doing a work you don't love?
3.What is your inspiration? How has personal experience influenced your creativity? Do you mean what I do for inspiration? A romantic way that works for me its to ride my bicycle, stay in a quiet place with pencil and some pieces of white paper. Other way, less romantic but yet effective, is to do the housework: vacuuming, ironing, wash dishes, etc.
4.What is your favorite creation? Please explain why you selected this one. I think its the Monna Lisa picture from Leonardo Da Vinci. This picture survived centuries and many tribulations, and it made it until today. By some special treatments of color of the paintings, it was digitally restored to its original splendor, revealing brillant colors and some interesting details. This is why I admire it.
5.What do you wish to accomplish with your art? Make beautiful pieces of digital art to make a beautiful world, earn some money with it, and also conquer the world if I have some extra time.
6.How do you know when a piece or project is finished and needs no additonal work? When it meets or exceeds the expectances of both client and developers. As a creative, this is sometimes hard, because artists always have the "last retouch" to make.
7.Have you ever been faced with negative feedback? How was this reflected in your work, if at all? Yes, many times. At first, this is very frustrating, but it gives you a gold chance to review the project, see it with other eyes, and do it better. So, every negative feedback turns into positive, nobody is perfect but can learn how to be.
8.What impact do you think that commercialism and the media has had on your work? Is this good or bad? In my category of work, this is positive (I am web designer and developer).
9.Are you a fan of cartoons? If so, what is your favorite one? Yeah!! Uh, I can't choose just only one...
10.What is playing in your CD player/Ipod right now? I'm listening an online radio with the iTunes, Classic Piano Jazz channel from Sky.fm
11.If you had to be any of these things, which would you like to be? a) a member of the opposite sex, b) a clock, c) a pair of shoes, d) a duck Please explain your choice. My choice is A. I think men have more job opportunities and less worries than women. But I'd be gay, because they're funny, nice dressed and clean.
12.If you only had 24 hours to live, how would you spend your day? I would like to be alone with myself a couple of hours, then spend twenty minutes with a good friend of mine to say I've always loved him, and the rest of the day with my daughter and parents.
