I'm considering making the plunge and buying an iPhone for myself here in the next week or two. I've been waiting a long time to purchase one but didn't want to jump too early and buy one that is going to be upgraded soon (engadget reports june or july).
After looking at the rumored changes, I realized that I'm not too interested in them. The 3G upgrade though nice is not important to me because I don't have 3G where I live and probably won't get it any time soon. Also the GPS and few other hardware upgrades do not interest me either.
Are there any current iPhone users on the forum who could give me their thoughts on the iPhone? Do you love it? Hate it?
It's definitely a device that makes you think everyday how did I manage to live life before without it. I am not a mac snob or even a big apple advocate, but the iPhone is definitely worth it. It makes communication so much easier with the comprehensive address book (with easy access to contacts), easy texting capabilities (no more toggling through number keys) and smart phone keypad. It's a practical device because you can take notes on the go, wherever you are, even if you have forgotten your pen or paper. It's an entertainment dream due to the iPod which holds most of my tunes and podcasts, plus the stand alone youtube player and the camera (which is takes great pictures in good light, at night- not so much). And the best of all you can access the internet and have the same type of internet experience if you were on the web, instead of the horrible psuedo mobile web experience that you get on normal phones. And if you don't have 3G or edge it doesn't matter because once you are somewhere where there is free WIFI (that you can access) you can surf the web. So that means you can access the internet at home, in the office or in the airport, without paying a dime to surf the web. I myself have never used the EDGE function.
You can also do things like setup gmail IMAP to access your gmail, add on games and download tunes via iTunes.
The only downside is the limited Bluetooth capability and not being able to view sites with flash in the browser. I love my little iPhone, if I could I would propose to it because I know that it will continue to make my life better. I encourage everyone to get a device like this because it is the future and it's a great investment. You won't need a new phone for a while. I just hope when you get one you won't become an iPhone flasher, showing it off like those Crackberry jerks.
Exactly the review I was looking for. How about durability? Is the hardware pretty solid? I've never had a problem with my macbook or iMac, they are well constructed.. Phones in my experience don't live up to every-day life...
I would suggest that you get a case and some clear film for the screen (to prevent scratches). I see some people using it without a case but I wouldn't because inevitably you will drop your phone. And when you do drop you're phone when it's unprotected, you will experience a mini heartattack.
The only thing I didn't find durable were the earphones with built in mic. My pair lasted 4 months, but a warranty is included so it's not a problem to replace them.
I know quite a few ex-iphone users and some who are very happy with their iphone.
All the ex-iphone users were already heavy smartphone users (they were used to surfing/emailing and using smartphones features) and after the initial "wow factor" faded away they regretted their purchase. I tried the iphone myself in the UK (borrowed from a pal) and my own take on it is that it looks great, but, it doesn't cut it as a smartphone. The pal who I borrowed the iphone from for a few days was so exasperated with the missing features he ended up with 2 phones..i.e. a real smartphone and an iphone. He just uses the iphone as a media player now.
It's seems to be a very expensive 'must have' accessory for the fashion concious, but, I think it's missing way too many basic features at the moment, unless you hack it and run the risk of bricking it.
In the USA, I notice that AT&T are pre-empting a lack of demand for new iphones by setting a price of $199 for the new iphone this year. I'm not sure about the wisdom of doing that..I imagine all the existing iphone users will be seriously racked off at yet another massive price drop.
If features and functionality is important to you, I would tend to wait for a few more versions before buying. The contracts that come with the iphone, at the moment, aren't cheap and you're pretty much locked into it for 2 years, minimum.
I'm an iPhone User/fanatic... I love my phone, but I'd advise that you wait a little bit. They're coming out with some new models on the 3G network with some great improvements and size improvements too.
