JavaScript / DOM / AJAX: Need a better way to do this

    I'm doing a sports site and a user can choose the sports he likes, out of a predefined list.

    The list of sports has > 100 sports. Currently we are using a scrolling group of checkboxes with the sports in alphabetical order.

    According to user feedback and testing, the field is hard to use.

    What would be a better way to make this field more usable, aesthetically pleasing but not exposing all 100+ options at one?

    it's more like a a usability question here.

    one solution - use autocomplete inputs, letting the user enter his hobbies himself. I'd go for this one.
    another solution - sort the 'sports' according to the game type - ball games, running, swimming etc.
