I'm curious how everyone does browser compliance testing?

I work on macs, I don't own a PC. However, I've been doing a lot more web design lately and I feel like i should have one around for testing purposes.

At first I thought I would use Boot Camp. But, when I asked my friend who's an apple tech, he told me to steer clear of Boot Camp. I trust his advice so I'm not going to mess with that.

He recommended VMware Fusion. Anyone have any experience with this prodcut?

I understand it costs around $80 plus you need to buy a windows license.

I'm wondering if its worth spending the $ on a whole computer or just go the VMware route.

How does everyone else test their designs in other browsers?

Considering that a new cheap laptop costs about 300€ and comes with Vista, I'd say buy a laptop.

If you're looking for virtualization software, I've personally had VirtualBox sitting in my downloads stack for a couple of months, waiting to be tried out. I've heard some good things about it, and it's free, too.

Yea, I was kinda thinking the same thing about the laptop.

I'll look into VirtualBox, free is always good!

    Thanks,

    Justin

How about browsershots.org? This way no need to spend money on anything...

I've been happily running Parallels on my MacBook Pro for 2 1/2 years now. I keep most of my apps on Mac (like Photoshop, etc.) but I have several browsers installed in Windows (XP) for testing.

It's the best of both worlds - Mac and Windows on the same platform - and not very expensive.

I use VirtualBox as well on a Windows Vista dev pc. I have two Windows VMs, so that gives me 3 versions of every major browser, and a Mac VM running OS_x86. I also run a Linux desktop, though I usually don't bother doing testing in the various linux browsers since pretty much everyone I know of who uses Linux as a desktop uses Firefox on it.

If you have access to the internet, you can use a free service like, Browsershots.org, to generate a image preview of how your website layout and design will look like in various browsers across the major platforms.

I make use of the Browsershots a lot when I'm writing/editing a page on my Linux netbook.
