I've found jquery to be really easy when implementing ajax or doing anything for that matter.

I'll throw in a second for jQuery as well. Check out the AJAX docs and AJAX demos for some examples.

I'll throw a third. Though, if you want to use Rails, you got to learn prototype.

I jumped right into the pool with Scriptaculous. I know it probably isn't the best route to take. Documentation is a little more on the sparse side but what examples are available can be studied (view source). Prototype seems to be the standard from what I've gathered.

It's definitely a daunting task. There are so many different implementations and examples.

I jumped right into the pool with Scriptaculous. [snip] Prototype seems to be the standard from what I've gathered.

Just to clarify for those keeping score at home: Scriptaculous is an effects library for doing animation stuff (sort of like moo.fx). Prototype is the part that does the actual AJAX interaction work. Scriptaculous (and moo.fx) also requires Prototype to be able to work at all.

Prototype is still the big name in AJAX libraries, but IMHO jQuery's stuff is a LOT easier to work with, especially if yr not real deep into JS stuff otherwise.

I guess I should have stressed the fact that I used Scriptaculous as my stepping stool to prototype. Sorry.

Heh, no worries. Just seems like a lot of people just associate all "ooh, javascript makes things {move/fade/resize/change color/etc.}" stuff with "being AJAX" lately when it's not necessarilly the case. Just wanted to help keep 'em seperate. :)

People associate AJAX with DHTML. Same rubbish 7 years later.
