How does the foodnetwork do their search box at the top of the website?
And inside the search box, the type is not a standard font I dont think. Is all of that CSS? How do they do that?

    Looks like it's flash

    That's Flash all right.

MTV has a similar Flash search field on the top of their site. It's a cool interface.

Definitely flash. But couldn't one use a background image, fix the width and font size and have border: 0? I have never tried that.

The input element is definitely customizeable with CSS. I've seen some pretty cool search input boxes.

The custom font however is not as easy to control without Flash.

If you want to customize a small piece of font with flash, try sIFR. It's pretty clean, quick and painless.

Oh god, that MTV page makes me cringe...

    Documents (2 files) 93 kb
    Scripts (20 files) 87 kb

Not to mention the usability issues and just horrible design and coding...

That food site isn't much better. Everything there could have been done with css and javascript. One of these days people will learn not to use flash as their primary navigation : ( No wonder flash always gets a bad name people abuse it so much >.<

I agree, sIFR is great. I'm not sure if it would work within an input element. That would be a cool experiment though.

Even font in the textbox can be customizable with CSS.

    Daddy,

I know that font can be customized in the input box with CSS, but not to the extent that you can customize fonts with Flash. The MTV and Food Network input boxes have custom fonts that most users don't have installed on their computers. CSS is limited to the fonts loaded on a particular user's machine.
