I'm thinking of going to the US(New York) if I get the relevant visa sorted and was just wondering if anyone knows what the market is like there.

Is there a demand for css, html, javascript developers in New York.

    Thanks for your help.

You'll find more positions in Silicon Valley than in New York, from what i found, and I just moved back to the United States from Germany. I had looked in both areas for about a year.

    Hi!

Find a full time job for web designer is will be very hard here.
Number of IT jobs cutting down everywhere including CA but live is expansive in California . New York pretty expansive too thought you might be able to find job there at least temporary. It's hard to find full time permanent position for web designer any more, seems to me companies more intrested in hiring multi skills people which has background in web design and programming as well.

    I hope that helps.

ahhhh!!! Then I'm not going crazy!

Where I live (in Australia) it is rare to find a web design job that doesn't require both back and front end skills. I've been working hard to upskill my portfolio, and working on lots of freelance projects too to make my portfolio more appealing. Freelance is winning out in the end. There's something about creative freedom that has a nice ring to it...

Seems there is a big call for multimedia and web jobs in the cities south of where I live. But it sure is reassuring to know that the US is in the same boat. (or should I be surprised?). Does anyone know how it is going in Canada?

I'm probably just being grumpy about this but here in Canada everyone wants a website at first until they find out their host offers "free, customizable web templates"
Two years ago I had more offers for freelance work then I could shake two hands at, now I'm on a 3 client roll where they've backed out after appearing interested

    An American's POV:

    1. You don't need a visa. We don't enforce immigration laws anymore in my country.

    2. Here's a link to the best resource that I know of for finding freelance and/or full time web design/development work.

    3. The demand for people who do front end (or user interface) development is absolutely on the rise. Egon is correct that the largest opportunities exist in northern CA, but there is no shortage of work springing up in the New York and Boston areas. (Just put "Ajax" on your resume and someone will be willing to hire you on the spot.)

The company I work for (outside Boston) has wisely separated our web team into IA, designers, UI developers and back-end (Java, .NET) developers. We even have someone who only does ActionScript programming. I think, as the economy begins to improve, you will see more organizations abandoning the virtually impossible "jack-of-all-trades" model.

adjustafresh is right. One of the best resources I've seen online is Craigslist for freelance work. Postings are updated daily and the number of inquisitive clients is astounding.

I hate to disappointed you but is not such easy as they describing it.
Yes there are some occasional freelance jobs on Craig list but not many most of the posts listing regular jobs offers Full Time in a house job. And a lot of times you will have to be in the same city even for freelance before they will consider you for the project.
As far as learning AJAX I never seeing good online tutorials but there are some good books about that. If know JavaScript/DHTML pretty good then learning AJAX peace of cake.

    Best, DS
