As reply on my post: <http://cssbeauty.com/skillshare/comments.php?DiscussionID=585&page=1#Item_2">
A mockup of a design was presented here. Asking for advice on color schemes

It would be even greater if you read the forum rules, specifically this one:
NO more "Site critique, site showcase, or site review". SkillShare's mission is to help with problems, and to discuss Web Standards and Web Design topics, NOT to review sites. If you need help with a certain problem on your site, then ask specifically about that issue.

Color schemes being used, layout. The mockup is this not part of the design process and therefore a design topic? It would be a shame if webdesigners cannot ask for help/give (constructive ) advice or constructive advice on that level.

I also agree that the rules here are a {little} harsh... although it seems to be if you word your post cunningly, you can get away with asking for layout/mockup questions.
I don't think it should be so hard to ask for advice either!

Unfortunately, several people were using this forum as a means of publicizing their sites rather than as it was originally intended - as a source of help and guidance. It's hard to build a strong forum community with a bunch of hit and run spammers who have little interest in participating in the forum throwing links to their website on the board.

There was a time when the people who were here to get help and share ideas were inundated with the Hey, check out my new website and let me know what you think type of posts. It gets old.

That being said...you can certainly get feedback on a design - just wrap it in the context of getting some technical help.

I must agree with evakula, assisting people with an assesment of their mockups is a huge part of skillsharing.

There are many of us ui/front end/web designers (what ever title you want to be called ) who are freelancers, independents working outside a web design firm and without a team. The input that they get from others often improves the work they will present to client or put forward in a project. Therefore a forum like this is so beneficial.

If you don't work alone you don't know how grateful one can be when others in the field can critique and offer great advice during the design and development stages. Asking and recieving advice for independents is a huge part of the development process (and consequently their own learning process). For many this is even part of the preliminary usability testing (the analysis of prototypes)

We must remember that creating accessible sites is not only about implementing CSS and making sure it works, but the whole package (creating the right balance of aestetics, functionality and usability). And if a designer can't recieve advice about the different aspects of a website it defeats the purpose of having great CSS.

    I totally agree with that.

I guess what we are trying to say with the rules is that you must ask the right questions. Asking about usability, asthetics, functionality is totally allowed, and we encourage it as long as the author understands what they are looking for and phrases questions correctly.

    evakula asked:
Would be great to have all your critiques on this layout proposal?

    Color, lay-out, etcetera

That right there will get you very subjective answers which might not help at all.

Instead if he elaborated more on what he created, and what he needs, then we might have let people take a shot at it.

Whilst we're on the subject of forum rules....

Is it ok for me to write a post advertising my services? (Designer for hire etc)
