I'm sure most of you have seen Lightbox or one of it's many other variations.

I'm interested in using it for a project, but as the audience is not exactly technically "with it," I'm worried about the fact that the script "breaks" the back button in some users mind.

Has anyone come across an implementation of Lightbox that supports the back button.

In other words, I'm looking for an implementation where when a user views an image displayed by Lightbox, and then clicks the backbutton, he or she is returned to the screen containing the link they clicked to view the image.

I haven't seen one with the backbutton enabled.

We had similar concerns when building boompa.com. For one, a lot of our forms use heavy amounts of AJAX and we were really worried about people wiping out there data. Some times we were able to fake back buttons by using #anchors. Dunno if that'll work for lightbox though, I haven't used it much, though it's a nice effect.

Yeah, given how many people seem to have picked it up in the last few months, I'm actually suprised that it seems no one has implemented a back button fix for it. I'd give it a shot myself, but for this project, I just don't have the time.

For the lightboxes I've done, next to the 'X' in the upper corner of each image, I've put in tiny type: "Close Window". So far, no one's been confused or complained.

Also helps to give the anchor tag a title attribute saying, "Close window" -- just to drive the point home.

I have just finshed a script which allows this. I have called it BackBox. It allows normal use of the backbutton. The back button just closes the lightbox (which is the expected action.)
