I am an in-house web developer. We are redesigning one of our website to make it W3C compliant after all that is why they hired me beginning of March.
This morning I was trying to help usability I believe.
I am doing the section about Getting Started. They are 3 pages in that section: A, B, C. In the current site they put a duplicate page! page A is the same as index (i.e when you click on Getting Started).
So I pointed out that two days ago, saying we should have getting started linking to A or a different content for index.
I went to the usability conference yesterday on eye tracking (it was cool). Back to work today to read the stupid text for the index page!
Basically a bla bla to tell the user how easy it is to get starting. How useful? Moreover, the text refers only to A and C. There is no links but a stupid sentence at the end: "Click on the various yellow tabs above.... " By the way the tabs are not above anymore as it is a new design! Pffttt.
So I rewrote the text a little and add some links in the text to points to A, B, C and got rid of the click bla bla. I sent it via email for approval.
droppyale > Nope they didn't say am fired, lol I don't care to be honest if they do :P I am sure I won't stay unemploy for long.
mringlein > I am not the designer. The site/layout is created by the in-house designer most of the time. I am the coder that makes the photoshop comes alive if I can say. Unfortunately I don't have power decision on the design of any site. I think the design looks better, but they are taking the old content and just sticking in the new site rather than think more carefully about it!!! I would have to fight in a few days to get rid of the pop up from the old site! I will probably have another shout post as they will keep their stupid pop up despite what I will say :(
nifkin > wrong guess, but it is related to Google.
The person said to me (she is not a technical person but still!) we can't have hyperlinks in the text that links to the other sections (i.e A, B, C) as it is BAD for SEO = google won't be happy. WHAT is that crap?
Anyway, I put the links in the text and I want to get rid of the "click on the left to choose a relevant section" what a pointless sentence - it is basically saying hey u dont forget to use the navigation or hey u the navigation is on the left! Pffftt it is obvious!
Better go to bed now, hard day at work tomorrow! It is bank holiday week end here in London :) So cool.
