    Hi all.

First off this is my first post here, seems like a nice forum.

I have been really interested in web design for a number of years now, but I started off with bad habits, using WYSIWYG software to create my websites. Now Ive left my job, to go back to college and study Graphic Deign/ICT as I want to give it a go designing for a living.

Could anyone point me in the direction of websites and books that are pretty basic, I want to learn CSS, but I barely know HTML.

    Thanks, Pete.

I think most of us started with three things

    1. Find good sites and "view source"
    2. Read Zeldman's Designing with web standards
    3. Search Google.com on CSS

I also did write a very VERY basic intro to "web standards" which covers the beginings of CSS and XHTML. This may prove helpful -- but remember, it is for the novice only -- us more advanced users will be bored.

    1. Web Standards [The Basics Part One] - CSS
    2. Web Standards [The Basics Part Two] - XHTML
    3. Web Standards [The Basics Part Three] - The Checklist

Would you say it is best to be fairly advanced with HTML before moving on to CSS? Im looking at a few tutorials and considering various books on CSS, though Im a little worried Im not going to get very far until Ive learnt more about HTML.

    Pete,

Get the basic foundations of HTML & XHTML first. How to properly code a page, get it to validate, etc. Then start styling the pages you've coded with CSS. Start with some inline styles to change font styles and colors, then move on to linking to a style sheet with some more advanced layout and image properties.

It's daunting at first, but once it clicks you'll be hooked.

Check out the CSS Zen Garden if you haven't already.

I agree. I would say CSS is a compliment to HTML. Learn to build a house before you stress out how to paint it. CSS should be used to control layout -- but you want to know the universe of the foundation, HTML.

Ok guys thanks a bunch, would you say the HTML for dummies worth getting? Or is there something better you know of?

I'd steer you away from a basic book like that. You ought to be able to find the information you need online:

    w3schools.com
    echoecho.com

Ok will do. Im reading the W3 schools website now, its a lot easier than I thought (though its real basic). But I am enjoying it, feel like Ive quit smoking or something!
