If you haven't heard yet, IE7 Beta 3 for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (and more) is available for download at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/. More info over at the IEBlog.

I haven't had a chance to play around with it yet to see if they've fixed the CSS bugs I've encountered in Beta 2, but I'm not keeping my hopes up.

They don't mention anything about CSS on their blog, so I dout they fixed anything... I will give it a try ASAP though.

Are any of you guys required to test in IE7 for your companies? Just curious how many companies are preparing and how many think it is still pre-mature. We test and I test, but I've heard a lot of arguments lately about building for hacks (filters) that may be corrected in IE7 at the last hour.

My company is currently in the middle of an IE7 initiative that I launched three weeks ago. IE7 Beta 2 which came out about 2 months ago was dubbed "layout complete" meaning that version of the browser was rendering CSS the way it would render in the final release. We've currently got interns bug checking sites that we maintain with IE7 Beta 2; overall there aren't as many problems as I'd anticipated, but it will certainly keep our front end development team busy for a while.

I've required that every website that goes out the door of our agency from this point on needs to render properly in IE7.

What's frustrating is the fact that the browser was slated to be released early this year. Who knows when it will arrive, but I assure you, when it does, there are going to be a lot of broken websites out there, and users aren't going to blame the browser.

IE 7 rocks. I use that in home and I like it alot. I'm gonna download beta3 tonight.

In work we have been tested our new projects with IE7 and we're gonna test all our projects when IE7 will be ready.

Are there any differences between the IE7+ I have bundled with Vista and the IE7 for XP? If you choose to answer; no speculations, please. I would personally assume that the Vista one would be the one to be testing on, but that's just a guess. I still prefer Firefox, even on Vista.

Yeah I know they said Beta 2 was layout complete, but I'm having issues so I'm still hoping for an unannounced miracle fix. Doubt I'm gonna get it though.

That being said, at work I do test our sites in IE7. Any layout problems I encounter, I'll try to fix. However, if I can't figure out how to fix the layout, I'm just making a note of it for now and not killing myself trying to fix it in case microsoft does end up surprising us by making layout adjustments in the last hour.

I'm assuming microsoft will give developers at least a few days to work with the final version of IE7 before it becomes an automatic update (they gave us over a month to deal with the Eolas ActiveX patch issue earlier this year), so once that time comes, that's when I plan on going crazy hacking my layouts so they work in IE7.

I hate IE, it should be forbidden to use this browser! U spend more time to make it work in IE than anything else!

Tomorrow I have to fix a page to make it work in IE7... pffft! Of course what is working in IE6 doesn't in IE7. A PAIN!

Apparently * html is not working in IE7 and IE7 seems to understand html>body (for example)
    Am I right?

You can use "*+html" for IE7 since '* html" doesnt work

This article tackles each hack/work-around case by case. Great stuff.

@ adjustafresh - are you making all of your clients websites IE7 friendly free of charge?!

Websites from this point on include IE7 compatibility (to the best of our abilities based on the latest release of the browser).

As far as I know, companies that have websites that were previously developed and are maintained by our company are being charged for the development time.

Ah, just wondered, I read your post as - your front end development team are busy fixing IE problems on websites you maintain - I wondered if you performed this work under some sort of maintenance contract or if you were charging for IE7 makeovers. We'll certainly be charging, and have the same policy as you - anything built from this point on will be IE7 compatible.

Does anyone have a link to how to run IE6 and IE7 beta 3 side by side? I don't want to get rid of IE6 just yet.

davviau - can't do it. IE is built into the Windows OS. To go back to IE6 you'll have to uninstall version 7.

    IE7b3, no.
    IE7b2, yes.

Older IE standalones can be gathered from evolt.org (though if you want them to work with conditional comments you'll need to make modified copies of the ie7.vbs and ie7.bat files from that IE7b2 page.

Microsoft Virtual PC is now FREE to download, making it (IMHO) the best free solution to running multiple versions of IE on one computer. Personally, I prefer VMware Workstation over VPC, but if I had to choose between paying for VMware or getting VPC for free, free definitely wins, especially when all it's used for is a testing environment.
