    I would like to password protect a file directory on a server using the .htaccess file. What is the most straighforward way to do this?

    Have you tried google? There are so many tutorials with just writing ".htaccess password protection"

    Or you could use .htpasswd, too.

    if you have cPanel installed, it will do this for you. Goto password protect directories.

    Make sure you know what type of server your site is hosted on and what sort of permissions you have as well. For example, if you are on a windows server with limited permissions, your .htaccess and .htpasswd won't work.
