I want to learn more about x/html & css but i'm slightly overwhelmed with the amount of books (and sites) - any suggestions as to which books people have found helpful would be great!? I probably need one thats starts at a basic skill level - I just want to be able to go away and read it - upskill and come back and ask sensible questions if I get stuck!

Stylin' with CSS does a good job of starting from "basic old HTML knowledge" and working forward from there.

If you want something a little more techy (and by far one of my favorites): Cascading Style Sheets: Separating Content from Presentation

When I was getting started, I found Zeldman's "Designing with Web Standards" to be extremely insightful. He helps you understand why and how.

I used to refer to it as the "orange book", seems as though the second edition is green -- what a shame!
