Well I'm trying to setup a forum and have become quite stumped when it comes to picking and choosing which is the best and which is the worst. I was wondering if you guys in your plethora of experience have the knowledge of any good forums or photo galleries.
The older the version the better because well I'm dealing with a horrible host with not updated php. I know... CRAPPY! But all ideas I'm willing to hear :) Thanks.

The PHP version 4.3.1 and Vanilla won't run on it.

Yeah... for those who want to know. HOSTONY.com is a horrible host. I definitely don't recommend using their servers. I'd like to use Vanilla, but that php is just out dated.

Their service might be bad.... but this is one of the few hosts I've seen with a fully CSS Based website.

Just because the box is beautiful, it doesn't mean that the software will be the same. Many software publishing companies try to cover the stink with a beutiful wrap. They may have a standards-based site, but their support is pathetic.

Just to be clear, I am not implying they are good because of their site. I just thought it was interesting.

    Anyways back on topic.

lastmanfx, have you searched around hotscripts.

To build a Gallery I suggest that you look at the following three opensource packages (the first two run using PHP):
    1. Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/)
    2. Coppermine (http://coppermine-gallery.net/)
    3. JAlbum (http://jalbum.net/)

The hardest thing to find is one that is easily customizeable... all these other ones are crazy with the templates and the html in php mix... it sucks.

i've had success with both vBulletin and with Gallery 1/2.

check out: http://www.mayhem.net.au/forum/ & http://www.mayhem.net.au/gallery/ for an example of how both can be styled. ( the forum was not tweaked enough because the client did not want to pay for that )

the main limitation with both of these applications is that table layouts are used. so if you are hard-coding css, you may have to stick to tables to save on time and your own sanity.

with phpbb, it too can be styled with many successful examples at: http://www.extremepixels.com/

Thanks everyone, I think for this project I went with phpBB and Plogger. You can check them out at
    www.ksuicehockey.com/forum
    www.ksuicehockey.com/gallery

I found that both were a pain to customize to that level, but hey it works :)

Plogger is a great gallery, very easy to set up and include in every site.
I don't know why you said it's a pain to customize, it includes a CSS file to tha gallery and another for admin area, it seems very easy to me .

By the way, i think you need to add some padding all aroud your site, text and images are very close to the borders in many places.

I would recomand using Invision power board. The old versions were free and have been taken offline but if you can find it it runs pretty well. check it out on my site http://www.sakgenla.com/forum/
